Homemade Smoked Salt
This Homemade Smoked Salt is smoky. Salty. Savory. Simple! Talk about a flavor-punch.
And guess what? You don’t need a smoker to make this scrumptious Smoked Salt.
All you need is a food processor or blender, smoked tea leaves and Himalayan salt.
My favorite way to use this Homemade Smoked Salt is to impart the likeness and flavors of smoke or barbecue to meats.
This really comes in handy when you don’t have the luxury of a food smoker.
Or even if you do have one but its not quite the right season for grilling outside.
Or maybe you just don’t want to deal with the steps involved in smoking foods.
It’s easy as pie (actually..pie is pretty dang hard to make, eh?)
Or rather…easier than making a mug cake!
Alls ya’s gotsta to do is add equal parts salt and smoked tea leaves to your food processor or blender, process, and presto! Your gourmet salt is now ready for action.
Himalayan salt is known for its health benefits in the form of electrolytes and bountiful and replenishing minerals.
Tea is known for its detoxifying and antioxidant properties. This seasoning is a superfood powerhouse!
Homemade Smoked Salt help you change up the ho-hum to snazzy.
Tired of plain ol’ bone broth?
Add smoked salt.
Casserole a little boring?
Sprinkle some o’ dis in there.
Wanna make a killer tri-tip or brisket in your Instant Pot?
You guessed it, babe…hit it up with your new magic powder.
You could even make a mock smoked salmon by sprinkling some on your filets and searing them up.
Add a little bit to your homemade carob or chocolate bars, or a dash in your mocha butter coffee to make smoked butter coffee (cocoa, butter and coffee being AIP reintroductions, respectively).
Where does the smoky flavor come from?
I like to buy a big bag of smoked tea. This is the brand I use.
(If you’re not ready to commit to a huge bag of smoked tea, there are a few brands out there sold in tea bags.
You can just cut open the tea bag and use what you need, then seal the rest up in a container for next time.)
To help use up that big ol’ resealable bag, here are a few other recipes of mine that use smoked tea leaves:
No-Cook BBQ Sauce (AIP)
Homemade Uncured Bacon (AIP, Whole30, Keto)
Instant Pot Brisket (AIP, Whole30, Keto)
Brisket Elotes (AIP, Whole30)
Smoky Mocha Chili (Whole30)
Kalua Pork from in The AIP Instant Pot Cookbook (AIP, Whole30, Keto)

Can’t wait to try! Is there a caffeine-free tea you’d recommend? I don’t do well with caffeine. Thanks so much!

Hi Sandy! I no longer do well with much caffeine either. I will have the occasional (caffeinated) matcha these days but too much / too often sends my adrenals into overdrive. I feel you!
Roobius is a red bush tea that is caffeine free as well as AIP friendly. It reminds me a bit of black tea but a little sweeter. My 10 year old daughter loves it, too.
Another good compliant one is Honeybush. Its lighter and milder, with a smooth finish.
