How Epstein-Barr Virus Triggers Hypothyroidism (EBV)

Learn How Epstein-Barr Virus Triggers Hypothyroidism and EBV Leads to Hashimoto’s Antibodies

When EBV is reactivated in the body, the thyroid is likely to struggle immensely.

We can do “all the right things” to manage Hashimoto’s (customized medication, lifestyle, supplements, nutrition, proper movement, nurture gene mutations, etc) and still be unable to claw our way out of a hypothyroid state if an EBV reactivation is present.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was discovered in high prevalence in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease when compared to the rest of the population

81% of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis cases had EBV inside the thyroid gland, a Polish study found!

The theory that EBV is a trigger for autoimmune thyroiditis is this: Once EBV-infected immune cells infiltrate the thyroid gland, the cells produce antibodies…triggering autoimmune attack of the gland.

When the thyroid is under constant attack and antibodies are high, this can affect vital thyroid levels like FT3 & FT4, creating a hypothyroid state.

How Epstein-Barr Virus Triggers Hypothyroidism

EBV can also contribute to stubborn hypothyroidism since it causes a loop of oxidative stress. In turn, this oxidation creates chronic inflammation.

This inflammation can cause hypothyroid-triggering issues like immune dysfunction, adrenal fatigue, hormone imbalance, mineral/nutrient imbalance, and intestinal permeability.

Holistic steps to take to deactivate EBV and move past hypothyroid roadblocks

Eat a primal, anti-inflammatory diet free of gluten and sugar

Support the gut (hello, bone broth, yogurt, and sauerkraut)

Check for and mitigate other coinfections (Lyme, Candida, SIBO, etc)

Detox your life (cleaning products, toiletries, toxic people, mold)

Support gentle daily detox (show extra love to your liver, lymph, and organs with dry brushing, rebounding, sauna, milk thistle, dandelion root, algae-free chlorophyll, etc)

Prioritize Quantum modalities (like prioritizing sleep, circadian rhythm, & safe sun exposure)

Manage stress (this is a BIG one)

81% of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis cases had EBV inside the thyroid gland.

Already doing all of the above?

Talk to your doctor about proven EBV-deactivating supplements, medications, & protocols for deeper support, like:

Monolaurin (1)

L-Lysine (2)

Methylene Blue (3)

Delta-9 (4)

Valacyclovir (5)

Ozone therapy (6) (see my Ozone therapy journey here)

Red light therapy (7)

Lithium (8)

Biofilm disruptors (9)

Ensure that you START VERY SLOWLY on these and focus on supporting Herxheimer reaction with binders and detox-supportive herbs when utilizing the above approaches. Talk to your doctor about safety, dosages, and timing about all of the above before starting.

How to test for Epstein-Barr reactivation

Thankfully, there are discounted EBV lab tests that you can order from the convenience of your home and then get drawn at your local lab. In most US states, you do not need your doctor to order these tests for you. Though if you can get your doctor to order them directly for you, there is a possibility your health insurance may cover them.

Here are my lab results which confirmed (via my functional practitioner) an EBV reactivation:

*I also recommend getting your functional thyroid levels checked before and after addressing EBV to track and document your thyroid hormone level progress.
